Christmas in Koh Phangan/ New Year’s Eve Party in Haad Rin
Posted on Dec 23, 2014
Christmas is not celebrated as part of Thai tradition but this does not stop the festivities on the island of Koh Phangan. The build-up from Christmas towards New Year is the most exciting time of year on the island, also known as Asia’s main New Year party centre, and this is when Haad Rin comes alive with the constant buzz of trepidation. This festive period has become increasingly popular amongst travellers from around the world who come to experience Koh Phangan’s Christmas, Countdown festival and New Year. More than 30,000 visitors flock here every year and line the infamous Haad Rin Nok beach, where the Full Moon Party is also held.
The festivities kick off in Haad Rin with Christmas on the 25th December. It’s a unique and memorable way to celebrate the day, where visitors exchange the snow for white sands and winter jackets for neon body-paint. The concept is the same as Full Moon Party, with dozens of sound systems along the beach that blast music until dawn, the ever-present fire displays and the impressive mix of party-goers that dance the night away. It’s a sensational party for those in search of an alternative way to spend Christmas where people can celebrate in true Koh Phangan style.
The Countdown Festival begins the day after Christmas and carries on until the New Years Party on December 31st. Daily activities and parties are organised throughout the Haad Rin including sports tournaments, beach volleyball, bikini contests and concerts. Various resorts and bars organise their own foam, fire and pool parties in addition to their own special evenings with drink promotions.
This year, the Green Cross is organising the first-ever Recycled Street/ Beach Art Competition during Haad Rin’s Countdown Festival. Teams of up to five people will compete to build a ‘Trash Bin Sculpture’ out of recycled materials found around the island. The sculptures will be judged by tourists and locals and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive cash prizes.
The New Year’s Party is the biggest event on Koh Phangan. Thousands of revellers flock to the island to celebrate the start of the New Year in a hedonistic fashion and experience a party like none other. Haad Rin’s beach is transformed and the venue is spectacular with lights and firework displays that light up the sky and the New Year is welcomed by thousands who party until the eastern horizon lights up. It’s an event not to be missed on the Koh Phangan calendar!
Whether it’s just for Christmas, New Year or for the entire festive period, travellers are guaranteed to bring home unforgettable memories of this magical island. An exciting atmosphere and electric vibe ensure that everyone is dancing and enjoying the biggest beach parties of the year. Don’t miss out on this experience of a lifetime and join us on Koh Phangan this Christmas and New Year!
