This covers the major open-air parties such as Half Moon, Jungle Experience, Sramanora and MAYA. How to Get to Koh Phangan

Posted by on 10-10-14 in All | Comments Off on How to Get to Koh Phangan

How to Get to Koh Phangan

Thailand has some of the best transport links in the whole of Southeast Asia, so getting to the Koh Phangan is very straightforward. The island is easily accessible via the airport on the neighboring island of Koh Samui, or from the regional transport hub of Surat Thani on the mainland. Whilst a plane journey is the quickest way down to Koh Phangan, the bus or sleeper train will provide an experience to remember.   Air   Flying down from Bangkok to Koh Samui airport is the quickest way to the island. The airport is conveniently close to Big Buddha pier, where travellers can catch a boat directly to Koh Phangan. It’s a short crossing from here, 30 – 45 minutes with the last boat leaving at 6:30pm. Bangkok Air is popular, flying into Koh Samui Airport over 40 times a day from various locations in Southeast Asia. The flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui takes approximately one hour but at around 3,800+ Baht per flight it is the most expensive option. An alternative is to land in Surat Thani’s International Airport. A number of budget airlines now fly to and from this airport, including Nok Air and Air Asia, who provide competitive air travel tickets ranging between 800 – 2000 Baht. From the airport, it takes approximately five hours to get to Koh Phangan, including a bus transfer and ferry ticket, costing around 500 Baht.   Train   The State Railway of Thailand provides a comfortable and exceptional journey on their sleeper train service from Bangkok down to Surat Thani railway station. The train ticket also includes a bus transfer to the pier, about an hour away, where travellers can then catch a ferry to Koh Phangan. The train consists of either first or second class carriages, all complete with fresh cotton sheets, pillows with cases and a sealed fresh blanket – perfect for a long journey. First class sleepers consist of full-size bunk beds, sink and air conditioning. Second class sleepers come with either a fan or air conditioning and are made up of facing seats with table which fold up to make two fairly spacious beds. The train also has a ‘ladies carriage service’ for just female passengers. This is a popular mode of transport amongst locals as well as tourists so ensure to book well in advance, especially during peak times.   Bus   Catching a bus is the most economic way to get to the island. For around 650 Baht, passengers can catch the bus in Bangkok at 7pm and arrive in Surat Thani in the early morning hours to catch the first ferry to Koh Phangan. On these buses, passengers have their own seat which reclines, a fresh, sealed blanket and their luggage is stored underneath in the cargo department. The buses are air conditioned and provide a comfortable, cheap service down to the island, with a couple of stops at service stations along the way. For slightly more – around 1000 Baht – travelers can catch the government bus. This takes them directly from Bangkok, straight onto the Raja ferry which arrives at Thong Sala pier. This saves time and is much more convenient as passengers will not have to go through the discomfort of changing modes of transport – ideal for a...

How to Get to Haad Rin

How to Get to Haad Rin

The peninsular beach and town area of Haad Rin is located on Koh Phangan’s most southern tip. It has an energetic and social atmosphere and attracts many people who want to experience a slice of adventure on their travels. This town has so much to offer, including attractive resorts, bars, restaurants, colourful shops, and the famous Full Moon Party, all surrounded by tropical greenery and overlooking the tranquil blue ocean. Until recently, Haad Rin was somewhat dangerous to get to. A treacherous dirt road, which cut sharply through the mountains, was all that connected the island’s main towns to Haad Rin. Luckily, in 2000, a concrete road replaced the dangerous dirt one, making Haad Rin much more accessible. Here’s a list of the best ways to get there:   Boat   Haad Rin has its own pier so getting there by boat is a breeze. If you’re coming from Koh Samui, the Haad Rin Queen ferry is the quickest way to get there. It connects from Koh Samui’s Northeastern pier, on the shores of Big Buddha Beach, direct to Haad Rin pier. It’s the cheapest boat to the pier and runs later than most other ferry services. Boats leave every two to three hours and the sailing time is around 50 minutes. There is also a daily longtail boat that departs from Maenam Beach on Koh Samui at 12pm and within half an hour drops passengers at Haad Rin beach, before completing its tour at Thansadet on Koh Phangan. Alternatively, there are a number of boats to the island’s main town of Thong Sala, where you can then get a transfer to Haad Rin, including: Lomprayah – Runs 5 times a day and takes 30 minutes Seatran – Runs twice a day and takes 30 minutes Songserm – Also runs twice a day and takes 45 minutes   Mini-bus/ Songthaew Taxi The recognisable Thai songthaews are a convenient mode of transport for getting to Haad Rin. The open back allows a cooling breeze to pass through and passengers can look out across the spectacular scenery along the way. It can be a bit of a bumpy ride but fear not as there is an overhead-bar to hold on to as the truck makes it up the notoriously steep hills to Haad Rin. Just let the driver know where you want to go, he has probably driven along the same road a few hundred times. The ride to Haad Rin takes approximately 25 minutes from Thongsala and costs around 100 THB per person.   Island Transfer When you book a room with certain resorts, they sometimes offer their own island transfer services. They will outline where they will pick you up and how to arrange collection. Some resorts will provide their own branded songthaews exclusively for guests whilst others will provide air conditioned mini-vans with a separate section for luggage.   Bike Hire There are plenty of bike rental shops located around the island and starting from around 100 – 250 THB per day, it’s a cheap option not only to get to Haad Rin but around the island too. There are a whole host of bikes available for rent but 125cc automatics are popular options, especially for inexperienced bike riders. Renting a bike on Koh Phangan doesn’t come without...

Trio of Paradise Beaches Haad Rin – Past and Present Times

Trio of Paradise Beaches Haad Rin – Past and Present Times

The Magic of Haad Rin The journey has remained the same for the last twenty years. Take the Haad Rin Queen ferry from Big Buddha on Koh Samui, and soon you are traversing that turquoise sea back to Koh Phangan. Which returning traveller hasn’t felt that sense of excitement deep in their belly, aware of the wonders that await them? As the mystical island rises out of the deep blue sea, time expands and the vortex draws us in, until we arrive at Haad Rin pier – ready for another adventure of a lifetime. Once upon a time, the world outside Haad Rin used to disappear into another existence. It would be weeks or months before us wide-eyed travellers, weary of the Asian trail, would leave these shores again. Haad Rin would draw us in and keep us spellbound, until another magical season had passed on by. Nowadays visitors may stay only a few days, but the magic still remains! Once the Full Moon Party has passed, Haad Rin, quite paradoxically, remains the best kept secret on the Thai islands. Today Haad Rin is quietly undergoing a facelift. The image of drunken youth trashing their party wonderland is fast becoming outdated, as beautiful, aesthetic resorts spring up all around Haad Rin’s three beaches. At the pier, Haad Rin Resort’s pool has an unsung olympic opulence to it. Up the hill, Sun Cliff boasts stunning views over Sunset Beach. While higher up still, Sea Breeze has spectacular views over another of Haad Rin’s sublime and unheralded jewels: Leela Beach.
The Sublime Leela Beach Twenty years ago Leela Beach was a deserted palm lined cove, with a shack restaurant and one lone beach hut. I remember a straw blond German staking out his territory in that lone beach hut for a few seasons in the early 1990’s.  You’d see him at every party in his silver ‘Spaceman Spiff’ trousers. He was either wearing those trousers or nothing at all, frolicking in the warm coral seas of Leela Beach. As Koh Phangan veteran Mario will tell you, our strange ways were tolerated back then. Nowadays the uncompromising beauty of Leela Beach can be enjoyed as much as it ever was, from the sensitively integrated resorts of Coco Hut and Sarikantang. The old Leela Beach Bungalows further down the seashore still remain, and this beach remains a favourite hang out for both those looking for a little more luxury – and those Koh Phangan long-termers in the know! What better waterfront jewel on Koh Phangan to spend the afternoon on than the wondrous Leela Beach?  Bohemian Haad Rin Sunset Haad Rin Sunset is still my all time favourite stretch of beach on the planet, probably. Not only does it have million dollar views to Koh Samui in the distance, it also has the most sublime sunsets I’ve ever seen. I’ve stayed at family run Bird Bungalows for the last twenty years. The three-tiered coloured sea is shallow here, but in recent years some classy poolside resorts have sprung up on Haad Rin Sunset too – upping the Bohemian sense on Sunset Beach from shabby to chic luxury. Of course long-standing Coral Bungalows with its pool parties, and high profile Muay Thai contests, is a must visit for the backpacker crowd. As is Seaside...
